PUMA PRESS – School News & Information: September 20, 2024 Message from the Principal

Powell families,

We want to celebrate one of our school’s greatest strengths—our diversity. We are fortunate to have a community where different cultures and backgrounds come together to create a rich and vibrant learning environment.

From September 15th to October 15th, we join the nation in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. This is a special time to recognize the contributions of our Hispanic students and families, whose languages, traditions, and perspectives enrich our school in so many ways. We are grateful for the beauty and strength that Hispanic culture brings to our community.

Thank you for your ongoing support in making our school a welcoming and inclusive space for all. Together, we celebrate the diversity that makes us stronger.

Your Proud Principal,
Jamie Luerssen

Some of our 4th grade classrooms have been exploring books that are written by, illustrated by, and written about people of Hispanic/Latino heritage (shoutout to Ms. Abuolba for the amazing behind-the-scenes work). They have even invited students and families to share about their culture/heritage on Google Slides that will be shared with the class (they plan to continue this throughout the year, celebrating all of the various communities within their classrooms). Thanks for celebrating our students this way, Ms. Long and Ms. Abuolba!

Our librarian and librarian assistant have made a display of books that celebrate the Hispanic culture as well.  We hope that showcasing different stories in this way will encourage students to learn about different histories and cultures.

FCPS Cares

Do you have a staff member who has made a positive impact on your child's life? Show your gratitude by leaving a recognition on FCPS Cares.

Centreville High School Homecoming Parade, September 27th at 5PM

All are invited to cheer along all of the Centreville Pyramid schools in the CVHS Homecoming Parade on Friday, September 27th starting at 5PM! Our patrols and members of the SCA will be walking in the parade and tossing candy to the crowd. We would love to see you along the route!

Youseum!

Our YOUseum is up and running, as well.  We currently have a 2nd grader’s culture on display and have another family signed up to share their Hispanic culture later this month.  Please consider signing up at this link to share about what makes your family unique!

Picture Day

What to expect on picture day

  1. When an order is placed online, the parent/guardian will receive a camera pass via email. This can either be printed or texted to the student and brought to picture day. The photographer will photograph the printed camera pass along with the student.
  2. If a student is not able to print their camera pass, that is not a problem. We will match up the student to their order manually in the production process.
  3. A parent may order from the flyer up until 24 hours after picture day. After 24 hours, the online ordering access may close. This will allow our imaging team to "Pull" all orders submitted and match them with the students photographed.
  4. When pictures are returned to school, all students that purchased pictures will receive their prepaid package. Any student that was photographed but did not order a package, will receive a "Proof" (PX) of their picture that was taken on picture day.

All proof packages offer parents a second opportunity to order prints. All orders are subject to shipping and handling costs of up to $8.50 and will be shipped directly to home

Kindergarten Book Character Day Parade – October 31st at 9:40AM

We are excited to announce that our Annual Kindergarten Book Character Day Parade will be held on October 31st at 9:40 AM.

Kindergarteners are encouraged to dress up as their favorite book character. Costumes must be school-appropriate and cannot include toy weapons. Costumes are permitted for kindergarten only.

Parents of kindergarteners are invited to join us by lining the sidewalk along the Kiss & Ride parking lot. The students will parade around the exterior of the building, where they will be cheered on by all of our students and parents.

December Author Visit

We are excited to announce that we will be hosting award-winning author Hena Khan in December during our book fair! Hena Khan has been publishing books for children, including many that center Pakistani American and Muslim characters, for over two decades. She writes award-winning books in a multitude of formats, including picture books, middle grade fiction, pick-your-path adventures, and graphic novels. Her stories are often centered around her culture, community, friendship, and family, and draw from her own experiences. Hena’s bestselling novels include Amina’s Voice and More to the Story. She is also the author of the Zayd Saleem Chasing the Dream, Zara’s Rules, and Super You! series. Hena’s acclaimed picture books include Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns, Under My Hijab, and It’s Ramadan, Curious George. She holds an MA in International Affairs from The George Washington University, has served on the board of We Need Diverse Books, and is a member of the Children’s Book Guild of DC. Hena lives in her hometown of Rockville, Maryland.

Family Book Club

We will kick off our Fall Family Book Club in October with Hena Khan's book Zara's Rules for Record Breaking Fun! Family Book Club is an opportunity for you to read through a novel as a family. Each participating family will receive a copy of the book to read together. Reading guides will come out in the Puma Press to help us all enjoy the book together. We will have an event to celebrate finishing our novel on November 7th. CPES students who participate in Family Book Club will be entered into a lottery for one of the 12 spots to have lunch with Hena Khan during her visit in December! Fill out the Family Book Club Form https://forms.gle/UptQX6bQu6wmu6rr8 to join and make sure you get your family's book. Email Mrs. Sejas ([email protected]) with any questions. Happy Reading!

PUMA PRESS – School News & Information: August 29, 2024 Important Dates
  • Monday, September 2nd - Labor Day Break (Holiday)
Message from the Principal

Powell Families,

We had a fantastic second week of school!  The smiles on everyone’s faces brought our building back to joyful life following the summer break. We are grateful to have strong connections and partnerships with our students, families, staff, and community.  We are excited about all the possibilities that this year holds.

As you know, FCPS has designated seven Mondays throughout the year as 3 hour early release days:  September 23, October 28, December 9 (new date to replace November 25), February 24, March 17, April 28, and May 19.

As we approach the first date, we expect our Pumas to follow their regular routes home.  To ensure their safety please complete THIS SURVEY for each child as soon as possible, if you have not already done so.  Students that require supervision due to hardship will be supervised by staff. Teachers will be involved in required professional development and will not be working with students during this time. Your response is essential in helping us move forward smoothly.

We wish everyone a wonderful Labor Day weekend! If you are traveling, we wish you safe travels. We’ll see you back at school on Tuesday!

Best,

Jamie Luerssen
Principal

Cafeteria Visits

Please be aware that all of us are getting used to new routines at the start of the school year. Thank you for your patience as those routines are established. We continue to welcome parents to join their kids for lunch during the school year. These visits may start on September 3rd. We ask that parents refrain from bringing in outside fast food .

Parents and guardians that visit during lunch, please take a moment to review these important reminders:

  • Due to the limited seating, as well as assigned seats in some classes, please allow all students to be seated before sitting at a table with your child. At times, there may not be extra seating for parents and guardians and we appreciate your understanding if and when this occurs.
  • Parents and guardians are welcome to eat while visiting in the cafeteria, and while at lunch please help our cafeteria attendants and school staff by assisting all students in the class, as needed. This might be to retrieve a forgotten fork, napkin or ketchup or simply open something for a student.
  • For safety and accountability of our students, students may only leave the cafeteria or go to the bathroom if school staff give permission. If a student asks a parent or guardian, please ask the child to continue to raise their hand so school staff can address their need.
  • Outside (restaurant) food is not permitted during lunch. Please do not bring these items for your child.
  • Students may only pass through the lunch line one time. Once seated, please do not permit students to leave their seat to return to the line for additional food, drink or lunch items.

As always, as questions arise please don’t hesitate to ask the cafeteria hostesses for clarification. Together we can do this!

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms are available in Parent Digital Consent.  Paper opt-out forms are available from your child’s school.  Students receiving special education services and accessing modified curriculum will receive a printed opt-out form for modified FLE lessons.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by email to [email protected].

"Welcome to an exciting new school year at Powell Elementary! We're delighted to have your child join our vibrant and supportive community. As we begin this school year, we want to highlight how our Care Team can be a valuable resource for you!"

School counselors play a vital role in establishing a strong foundation for students to become confident and successful learners. By collaborating closely with teachers, parents, and the community, counselors focus on education, prevention, and early intervention. They address social and emotional challenges to help students achieve academic success, explore career opportunities, and develop essential life skills. Our support services include classroom lessons, group counseling, individual counseling, collaboration, consultation, and more.

School Social Workers are trained mental health professionals who can assist with mental health concerns, behavioral concerns, positive behavioral support, academic, and classroom support, consultation with teachers, parents, and administrators as well as provide individual and group counseling. School social workers help to meet academic potential, competence and confidence especially where home, school and community collaboration is the key to achieving student success.

School psychologists help support the academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and mental health needs of students. They utilize a range of evidence-based assessment, intervention, and consultation strategies to help students overcome challenges, develop their strengths, and achieve success in the classroom and beyond. As members of various student support teams, they collaborate with staff and families to facilitate access to learning, support positive behaviors, and enhance mental health and wellness.

PUMA PRESS – School News & Information: August 16, 2024 Open House

We want to express our heartfelt appreciation for making the time to bring your children to Open House this week. It was wonderful to reconnect with returning families and meet our newest members of the school community.
We were truly inspired by the thoughtful messages and aspirations that were shared for your children for our "Hopes and Dreams" display. Your words will paint a beautiful picture of the bright futures we envision together. This inspiring display will be hung in the cafeteria for all students to enjoy and then will be shared with the entire school community during Back-to-School Night in September.
Your presence at Open House reinforces our belief in the importance of a strong partnership between home and school. We are committed to working collaboratively to create a nurturing and enriching learning environment for all students. Thank you once again for joining us. We can’t wait to see what this school year will bring!

2024 - 2025 School Calendar

The 2024 - 2025 FCPS School Year Calendar can be accessed here. We encourage families to review the calendar when considering trips or preplanned absences.

Elementary School Cell Phone Policy

Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Watches that serve a dual purpose (e.g., smart watch) may be worn; however, phone features (e.g., texting, internet, calls, etc.) are to be off when phone use is prohibited. Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in bathrooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency. With the approval of the principal or their designee, teachers may allow usage of cell phones for instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool; however, one-to-one FCPS devices should meet most needs. Cell phones may be used on campus before and after school, only.

Early Release Mondays

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development.  Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route.  However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families.  To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.

The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:

  • September 23
  • October 28
  • November 25
  • February 24
  • March 17
  • April 28
  • May 19

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete THIS FORM for each of your children who are enrolled at Powell Elementary.

The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 23, 2024 and October 28, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student.

Cafeteria Visits

Parents and guardians that visit during lunch, please take a moment to review these important reminders:

  • Due to the limited seating, as well as assigned seats in some classes, please allow all students to be seated before sitting at a table with your child. At times, there may not be extra seating for parents and guardians and we appreciate your understanding if and when this occurs.

This might be to retrieve a forgotten fork, napkin or ketchup or simply open something for a student.
  • Students who bring their own lunch should also bring the necessary utensils.

  • We are also looking for parents to help during Kinder and 1st grade Library (12:55-1:25 or 1:25-1:55). Parents would help students with activities after the story, along with helping them with routines in the library. Please fill out this form if you are interested in either volunteer option!
  • Did you find any library books over the summer? We would love for your student to bring them back so that they can be enjoyed by others!

To kick off the year, our namesake, General Colin L. Powell, is displayed in our inaugural YOUseum showing one of the many ways that our school is unique! All are encouraged to stop by the lobby during Open House to preview our YOUseum!  A link to sign up will be available in the coming weeks. Be on the lookout! Keep in mind that each display will be up for 2 weeks and families are invited to sign up independently OR with a group of friends, with two signup slots for each two week period.

As always, please don’t hesitate to let me know how I can support you and your child(ren) now and as the year progresses.
