From the Inside Out was a HUGE success!  Thank you to all the students who participated and thank you to the parents for allowing them to sign up for our first ever musical play directed by me, Cheryl Baker.  The students started working on this production in January, and met every Monday for 90 minutes.  We learned choreography from our student teacher, Cara Ainge, and she even came to our performance!  Theatre experiences can unlock the best part of a person and allow them to experience themselves in a whole new way.  Not only did they find their actor within, but they learned responsibility, found their courage, worked as a team to learn everything and finally kept trying even though it was hard at times.  I am very proud of our performance and of course all the performers.  Let’s do it again next year with a different play with more costumes and more characters.  A survey will be sent out this week to the participating students regarding their thoughts for the next show.

Have fun creating!

Guiding the Stream: Girl Scout Troop 56092 Supports Water Safety in our Community

Colin Powell Elementary Girl Scout Troop 56092 has been working toward earning their Wonders of Water Journey Badges this year. They are learning why water is important and how they can conserve it. They have learned about the water cycle and how all the earth’s water is connected. They shared their love of water by creating ocean-themed sensory bins for the 2 PAC classrooms at CPES. They also pledged to save water by doing activities such as taking shorter showers and baths and using less plastic bottles and more reusable bottles.

Their journey ended this April with a take action project to replace old “No Dumping” stickers on the storm drains around Colin Powell ES. The stickers remind the community to not dump anything into our storm drains including sediment, nutrients, toxics, pathogens or litter. Storm drain water flows to the local streams and rivers and ends up in our closest watershed, Little Rocky Run. Thank you to the troop parents, administrative team at Powell ES, and the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District for their support and guidance this year. Only rain in the drain! Save Water! -Troop Leader/CPES GirlScout Liaison Chelsea Washington”

Spring SEL Screener Results

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of March, providing updated information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For more information about the screener please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s school.

Art Show and Book Fair! Pyramid Art Show Thank You Powell Community From Northern Virginia Conservation Trust!

April 8, 2024

Dear Powell families,

A solar eclipse is happening today and (weather permitting) will be visible in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m. with the maximum eclipse around 3:20 p.m. This will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the United States until 2044. You can see the path of totality on nationaleclipse.com.

Thanks to a generous donation from Terre Centre ES, we have acquired ISO 12312-2 approved eyewear so that students can safely view the eclipse ONLY while wearing the eyewear. Grade levels have an opportunity to go outside and view the eclipse with approved eyewear. Additionally, classroom teachers may live stream the event in the classroom. If you would prefer for your child to stay inside, please call the office at 571-522-6000.

Here are some important reminders:

  • Do not look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with Terra Centre’s dismissal), and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please remind your children to NOT look up at the sun unless they have the approved eyewear. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details and family resources, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

Best,

Jamie Luerssen

Dear Powell families,

A solar eclipse is happening tomorrow, April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. The NASA website has more information about eye safety.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please remind your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

6th Grade Capstone Learning Experience to South Korea

Our students and chaperones had a successful learning experience and are back from our Second Annual Capstone Learning Experience, Powell’s international field trip to South Korea for students in our 6th grade Korean Immersion Program! This international field trip first launched in 2019 and then was unable to continue due to COVID-19 and travel restrictions. We are thrilled that we were able to bring this experience back and offer it once again to our 6th grade students in the Korean Immersion Program.

Our travelers experienced amazing Korean culture in four different cities and learned about Korean traditions and history. We are proud to share that a partnership was established with Yang Jeon Elementary School in Seoul. The students had the opportunity to visit the school and joined the 6th grade English and PE classes and loved every minute. Since the return from the trip the students and chaperones continue to share that the experience was full of joy, laughter, learning, and fun!

We share our sincere appreciation for the sponsors of the trip as it wouldn’t have possible without their generous contributions.

School Office Closed – Spring Break

During the week of March 25 - March 29, the office at Powell ES will be closed.  We are happy to assist you in advance of spring break or immediately following our return.

Message form the Principal

Powell families,

This school year we have focused on instilling the Portrait of a Graduate skills within our students and this past week we were thrilled to have a special guest share about this important work during the PTA meeting. Thank you to Jeff Lonnett from FCPS Instructional Services for sharing a presentation and a big thank you to all of the parents that participated. An overview of the information shared can be found HERE. We also had a great week digging into the learning around Portrait of a Graduate by holding grade level assemblies with our students, K-6. Ask r child today about their grade level assembly they had this week! All of our students had a blast talking about Portrait of a Graduate, how they are using the skills, and how they have grown over time!

We wish everyone a wonderful Spring Break! Whether you are traveling or staying home, we hope you enjoy the week enjoying friends and family.

Don’t forget, Monday and Tuesday are student holidays! We will see everyone when we return to school on Wednesday, March 3rd.

Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.
